Evaluation

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Candidates will evaluate their work electronically. This MUST contain an element of audience feedback and may be either integrated with the presentation of the research and planning material or may be presented separately. Where candidates have worked in a group, the evaluation may be presented individually or collectively but the teacher must allocate a mark according the contribution/level of understanding demonstrated by the individual candidate.

My magazine has most of the normal conventions of a music magazine, such as; a barcode on the front cover, a bold mast head, page numbers, contents on one page, a house style and an instrument on front cover. However, I have challenged the conventions by only using text on one side on the front cover and adding in an editors page. I think that I have created a conventional pop/RnB music magazine as it is all the layouts are clear and interesting, however by making it more clearer and fresh I have challenged the conventions to create a magazine which I think will attract my target audience. My magazine sends the message to my target audience that the magazine is made for their age, 15-19, because of the young artist and stylish clothing on the front cover.

I feel that my magazine represents a fresh, new and young social group with the young artist, stylish clothing and informal – chat – text. My social group reflects my target audience as I feel teens are going to want to read about their age group. I know this because many of my friends are at this age and read about teens becoming famous. Also I have made my layouts are simple and clear so that teenagers can read what they want quick and easy. I have also included many pictures to attract my target audience to my social groups.

Throughout my research to begin developing my product I looked at prints such as; live and gallary magazine. However, as they are not music magazines and this showed when I received feedback. Therefore I decided to look at magazines such as; Q and NME. They were busy and had many pictures. In the end I came to the conclusion to use ideas from the clear/cut magazines and the busy ones. I feel this worked well as my feedback said that they were attracted to the striking colours contrasted with simple text. My inspiration for my house style was mainly taken from live.

My target audience is 15-19 year olds, I choose this because this is the age where teens like to catch up on new and upcoming artists. I feel that I have successfully targeted my audience as my artist is young and new on the music scene. I have presented this by big and bold text about her and dressed her in stylish clothing. Also my article is a question and answer interview, therefore I feel that my target audience would me more likely read it then have to read a two page essay about the new artist.

My original idea to attract my audience was to use a clear and crisp cover with bold writing. However, I felt that young teens were not going to be attracted to this as it looks too sophisticated. Therefore, to attract my audience I made the cover unusual and striking with the bold writing. I feel that this worked really well as the majority of my feedback I received told me that the cover was "striking", "modern", "fresh and bright" and "eye catching". On my contents and editors notes page I have used all correct grammar but wrote in a quite chatty way as if I was talking from a friend to a friend.

Throughout my project I have learnt how to use Photoshop CS2 very effectively, especially as I did a many trials before my final product. This helped me a lot when I began my magazine. I edited my pictures on Photoshop CS2 and then dragged them on Indesign where I was able to create a magazine page. Indesgin was a very complicated programme for me to use however it didn’t take me too long to grips with. I feel I have learnt so many skills from doing this project, for example; I now know how to edit an image knowing how to balance the brightness and contrast, I know how to cut out an image out from the background by using the magnet tool and I also know how to place images and text on Indesign in effective and eye-catching way.

Since creating my preliminary task my skills with PhotoshopCS2, my skills have increased dramatically. I am now able to use Photoshop CS2 very effectively to edit, crop, cut and merge images. After my preliminary task I was introduced to Indesign. I used this program for the majority of my final product and because I did trials I was able to complete my product and successfully target my audience. I also have a different understanding on the way teenagers are attracted to products and that not everyone likes the same thing, therefore you need to be careful how you layout things. Also making this product took a lot of time and I feel that I have much more patience with my work and now have the ability to seek perfection.

I have decided to change my orignal 4 column grid system to a 3 column grid system, as i feel that the information doesnt look so cluttered. Its spread out and easy to read.
I also have scheduled my first two real photo shoots, both for the main article, Eve. The front cover and the first page of the article will be shot Monday 19th January at 1pm then the next two pages are going to be shot on Wednesday 21st January at around 3pm.

Thursday 4th December

Last lesson I finished my 3rd draft of my planning section essay. I have highlighted the parts I have changed and I have given it to Mr Bonney. I am now waiting for my result. I also have continued to experiment on Photoshop with my pages and have begun to drag them onto a picture of a double spread page book, to see if the layout worked well.

Monday 1st December

I then put my text into columns on pages and then saved it to a pdf so that i could screen grab the text and insert it onto my double page spread.
I also have received my 2nd draft of my planning section essay back and I am really proud of the progress I made. I have two constructive criticism's and have begun to work on them. I am also producing more experiements and drafts for my contents and editors page and also my double page spread.

Wednesday 26th November

The first image is a draft of the first page for my double page spread. I used an image that I took on my 1st photo shoot to represent some kind of style and positioning for where my model will be. I also tried another picture to see which one looked best. I found that the first image catches your eye much better. Also with the article writing, I experimented by going on to pages and saving the text as a PDF then screen grabbing it so that the text was in a column instead of jagged. I feel that this looks a bit boring though and I will have to experiment with the background more.

Begining of DoublePageSpread

The background will be a picture from my final photo shoot. I am going to look through my previous photo shoot for a photo position for the page so then therefore when I do my final photo shoot.
